    iTunes questions

How does the iTunes setup work?  I looked on iTunes and couldn't find my podcast.  Could you walk me through getting it on there?

    Thanks,

    Jayson

    Re: iTunes questions

    Hi Jayson,

You can configure your iTunes settings by logging in and going to http://admin.podcastspot.com/settings/itunes. You can also access this page from your admin by using the menu at the top (Podcast -> Manage Settings -> iTunes Settings). There will be more instructions on that page on how to setup your iTunes feed.

Let me know if you have any other problems!

    Re: iTunes questions

Hi Dickson!  I've said this before and I'll say it again...you guys know what customer service is.  Far too many online services ignore that important aspect of the business model and that is why we have chosen to stay with Podcastspot.  Your personalized approach is appreciated.

First question: How do we get our logo as the Album graphic that iTunes posts?

Second question:  Are there any plans ofr giving more flexibility to podcasters to pimp their pages?  I'd love to see more flexibility regarding the available themes, the look of each podcast and the types of information we can post on there.  For example, a lot of our information falls outside of the boxes provided by the theme.  This makes it look sloppy.  Take a look at our page:  spartanyouthradio.podcastspot.com and look at the About section and the episode times.  Also, I'd like to see the tags MUCH smaller and at the bottom and the About section at the very top...so that we can use it as an introduction.  It would also be great to be able to follow the formula of Facebook and include some apps like a multiple choice survey of our visitors and a place to post news that don't otherwise fit in the About section.  I would even bet that many podcasters would pay a premium for these extras.

Third (and related question):  I'd love to be able to raise funds for our school by offering advertising on our page.  More flexibility given to the podcasters would allow us to do that.

Again, thanks for your prompt response!

That is one thing I would like to see as well.

What I really want to do with my podcast is add "Digg this Podcast at Digg.com" to my sidebar. Or add "Subscribe Via iTunes". I don't think the little orange feed icon is enough. I have heard you can do this type of thing with Wordpress, any way we can do this at Podcast Spot?

And something that has nothing to do with the above comments, but may as well throw it in, are we able to blog using Podcast Spot? Like post just text, no episode? And one more thing, can we feature more then two episodes on our front page?

    Thanks.

    Re: iTunes questions

I like Jamit's idea about offering us the ability to have more than two episodes on the front page.  My students are saying that a 1/2 hour episode is too long and I was thinking it would be better to chunk it into 3-7 minute episodes but the older ones will get lost if they're not on the front page.  I think we should be able to change this setting.

    Re: iTunes questions

    Hi Jayson,

Thanks for your vote of confidence! We've had our fair share of experience with slow customer service so we've made it one of goals to respond within a few hours. Obviously, this long weekend was an exception :)

    First Question:
In your iTunes settings, the image url will be used as the album graphic in iTunes. If you right click on an image and goto properties, you'll be able to get the image url. For example, your podcast image is: http://images.podcastspot.com/users/spartanyouthradio/podcast/SYR%20logo%20box.jpg

    Second Question:
We have discussed the idea of allowing widgets (similar to Facebook apps) on your podcast page though we haven't set a timeline on this feature. We are currently working on revamping the statistics page and after that, we'll re-evaluate which feature to do next and certainly your input will be taken into account.

I'm not too sure what you mean about the page being "sloppy". I've taken a look at your podcast page and all the content fits within their space without running over. This could be a browser issue and something that we can fix from our end. Can you tell me which browser and version you are using?

    Third Question:
As you've said, this is somewhat related to the second question and if we address the issue of widgets, there's no reason why we can't have an advertising widget. But at the moment, you're not able to customize your page in that manner. Have you considered putting advertising in the content itself? That could be another alternative.

This is something we might be able to do fairly easily. I'll see if we can roll this into our next update.

    Re: iTunes questions

    Hi Dickson,

Thanks for answering my questions.  I have another one for you, one which might prove our school to choose another service:

My students have decided to change our format from a once every two weeks or once a month podcast to weekly, smaller ones.  Instead of a 1/2 hour - 50 minute program they want to make a series of smaller ones.  Unfortunately, the front page, as it is set up now only allows for TWO of the most recent podcasts to be shown unless you hit the See More Episodes option (or something like that).  Is there a way to change this so that ALL the podcasts from, say, the last week are shown on the front page and older ones are accessible on another page?  I don't want a student of mine to be the unlucky kid of mine to find their podcast article relegated to the secondary page only because we had three episodes to post that day.

Again, thanks for your support and customer service.  It's appreciated!

    Re: iTunes questions

Currently that is not something you can change, but we can add that feature really easily. What kind of options do you think make sense? I think "show episodes from the last week" is a good idea to start.

Let us know and we'll add it right away!

    Re: iTunes questions

Brilliant!  For my students, it would be best to have "Show episodes from the last two weeks" as an option (they have great intentions of doing weekly episodes but that sometimes fizzles!)  If this isn't doable, the last week option would be fine too.

    You guys are brilliant!  Thanks.

    Re: iTunes questions

    Hey,

We've added this feature now! Here's how to get to it:

    1. Go to the Podcast Spot Admin
    2. Under the Podcast menu, choose Manage Settings, and then Basic Settings
    3. Click on the "Modify additional information if you want" bar to expand the extra section
    4. At the bottom is a drop-down box called Front Page

We decided to put in a few different choices. Currently, you can select from six options:

    • Display the 2 most recent episodes (default)
    • Display the 5 most recent episodes
    • Display the 10 most recent episodes
    • Display episodes from the last seven days
    • Display episodes from the last fourteen days
    • Display episodes from the last thirty days

Be sure to press "refresh" when you visit your podcast site. That's all there is to it!

Thanks for the suggestion, and happy podcasting :)
